Bone cancer can begin in any bone in the body, but it most commonly affects the pelvis or the long bones in the arms and legs. Bone cancer is rare, making up less than 1 percent of all cancers. In fact, noncancerous bone tumors are much more common than cancerous ones.
The cancers in other body parts metastatize into the bones but then they are not termed as bone cancers and are known as metastasis of the primary cancer.

Bone Scan is one of the best diagnostic test to detect bone cancer. Biopsy of the affected bone however is the only confirmative test for bone cancer. Once it is established that it is bone cancer then whole body PET Scan is done to find out whether the cancer is localized to the bone or spread to other organs of the body.
Surgery - Just like any other cancer, surgery is the best treatment option in bone cancer also. The goal of surgery is to remove the entire cancerous tumor. In most cases, this involves special techniques to remove the tumor in one single piece, along with a small portion of healthy tissue that surrounds it. The surgeon replaces the lost bone with some bone from another area of your body, with material from a bone bank or with a replacement made of metal and hard plastic. This is followed by Chemotherapy Cycles in some cases. Sometimes amputation is the last resort to remove the tumour.
