Bone Scan In India
A bone scan is a nuclear imaging test that helps diagnose and track several types of bone disease. Your doctor may order a bone scan if you have unexplained skeletal pain suggesting bone loss, bone infection or a bone injury undetectable on a standard X-ray.
A bone scan is also an important tool for detecting cancer that has spread (metastasized) to the bone from a tumor that started in a different organ, such as the breast or prostate. Similarly, a bone scan can detect some abnormalities related to leukemia and lymphoma.
Reasons for Bone Scan
To look for problems in the bones (skeletal system)
Bone scans can show lesions (abnormal areas) in the bone 6–12 months before they would appear on an x-ray.
To find the cause of unexplained bone pain
To find out if cancer has spread (metastasized) to the bone
To find out if cancer treatment is working
Procedure for Bone Scan in India
The bone scan test has 2 stages:
1.The radiopharmaceutical is given by injection
2. The person returns later for scans.
The bone Scan Procedure includes the following steps:
A radiopharmaceutical is injected into a vein in the hand or arm. Technetium 99m (Tc-99m) is usually the radiopharmaceutical used.
The radiopharmaceutical travels through the blood and collects in bone, especially in areas of increased activity (where the bone is growing, breaking down or repairing itself).
