Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant in India

What is Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant?

"Auto" means "self." Stem cells are removed from you before you receive high-dose chemotherapy or radiation treatment and stored in a freezer (cryopreservation). After high-dose chemotherapy or radiation treatments are done, your stems cells are put back in your body to add to your normal blood cells. This is also called a "rescue” Bone Marrow Transplant or an Autologus Bone Marrow Transplant.

What is the procedure for Autologus Bone Marrow Transplant in India?

Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant is performed including various steps like:
1.Initial Evaluation:
In this step Bone Marrow Transplant Specialist, would determine if you might benefit from high-dose chemotherapy with a peripheral blood stem cell transplant at this time. Also, the patient would be evaluated & receive further information by the Bone Marrow Transplant specialist
2.Induction Chemotherapy:
Patient receives high-dose chemotherapy with a peripheral blood stem cell transplant receives several cycles of regular dose chemotherapy first. This is to see if the cancer cells respond to chemotherapy drugs and to reduce the number of cancer cells to a minimum.

3.Pre-Mobilization Evaluation:
Once the patient have completed induction chemotherapy then the Bone Marrow Transplant physician will perform tests to determine if you should proceed with the autologus bone marrow transplant. These tests will evaluate the current stage of your cancer so that your response to the induction chemotherapy can be assessed.
4.Central Venous Catheter (CVC) Placement:
A CVC is a tube that is placed in a large vein in your upper chest with the internal tip extending as far down as your heart.

5.Mobilization:
A technique used to increase the number of stem cells in the peripheral blood. There are two common methods of mobilization are colony stimulating factors (CSFs) and chemotherapy.

6.Stem Cell Collection:
The collection of stem cells takes approximately three to four hours for each procedure. During the procedure you may relax in a chair or bed, watch television, listen to CDs or read. Your blood will be withdrawn through your apheresis catheter and circulated through a cell-separating machine

7.Pre-Transplant Evaluation:
A process where the Dr Katewa will want to make sure that the chemotherapy did not cause any damage to the patient’s heart, lungs, kidneys or liver or that you did not develop any infections if your white blood count was low.
8.Stem Cell Transplant:
Several days after the high-dose chemotherapy is completed, your own stem cells will be given back to you. It is very much like a blood transfusion. There are few side effects to this procedure as the patient may notice some chilling, nausea, fever, cough, flushing, headache, abdominal cramps or diarrhea.
